Over the years, it seems that we’ve heard about so many people tragically losing their lives to a gun unfortunately, or we hear about a mass shooting taking place just like we saw in Aurora, Colorado at a movie theater, Newtown Connecticut at an elementary school and Charleston, South Carolina at a church of all places. Saturday night, former Saints defensive linemen Will Smith was tragically murdered following a minor car crash. He was shot after exchanging words with the driver that rear-ended his car. He was shot multiple times and his wife, Racquel was also shot in the leg.
When you hear the name Will Smith, you often think of the actor. Will’s twitter bio even said: Not to be confused with Will Smith the actor. He was a pro bowler and was a very key piece to the Saints Super Bowl run in 2009 and was a true anchor of that defense. He wasn’t the flashiest player on the field because he simply just went about his business. According to many of the guys that he played with, he was nothing but class and he was always willing to take a player under his wing and mentor them. To many, Drew Brees is no question the leader of this Saints football team, but Will Smith was considered the heart and soul of the team and every team has a guy like that.
My thoughts and condolences are with the entire Smith family, the Saints organization and those who were fortunate to know him. The senseless violence must stop.
