When you discuss the Kansas City Chiefs defense, a few guys will normally pop up in conversation. Eric Berry and his remarkable battle and defeating Leukemia, Derrick Johnson, a guy that anchors everything for their defense in the middle, the young and upcoming corner Marcus Peters, Tamba Hali and then there’s Mr. Justin Houston. 2014 was his breakout year as he led the league with 22 sacks and he almost came close to breaking the hall of famer Michael Strahan’s record of 22.5 sacks in a single season. His big season that year got him a big time contract extension to stay with the Chiefs. His 2016 season could be in serious doubt after having surgery on his ACL.
This is such an unfortunate blow to the Chiefs and their defense. You talk about a guy that can set the tone for the Chiefs on the defensive side of the football, that’s Justin Houston. He’s a naturally gifted pass rusher with a terrific first step and he can change a game at any given time with a takedown of the quarterback. He can shed blockers very easily, he can get up the field and he’s become hands down the Chiefs best defensive player. Houston and Tamba Hali have become one of the best tandems when it comes to rushing the passer. I really like Houston’s motor on the football field. He’s a relentless guy that gets to the quarterback by all means and wins every single battle in the trenches. The speed he shows, the aggression he displays and how he plays until the whistle is blown is what you want in a football player.
Over the last four seasons, Justin Houston has a total of 50.5 sacks. That ranks second behind J.J. Watt. I really hope this guy can come back and bounce back from this. He’s become one of my favorite pass rushers to watch and break down.
