With a ton of free agents expecting to make a move to a new team or resign with their current team, many were available and on the market. Last season, Eric Weddle publicly stated that he would not be returning to the Chargers after the 2015 season and I’m not necessarily the biggest fan of players speaking about their future plans while a season is still taking place because it can come off as a distraction and the media will continue to ask you about it non-stop. Any team would love to have a guy like Weddle on their team and he’s one of the best safeties in the NFL today. Monday, he came to an agreement with the Baltimore Ravens on a four-year/$26 million deal.
I’m a big fan of the Ravens making this move. The last two seasons, the Ravens secondary has been absolutely terrible in every phase of the game. In 2014, the Ravens were so decimated with injuries in the back-end of the defense that they had linebackers playing safety and safeties playing corner and teams would expose them left and right as you would expect. Last year with Terrell Suggs out with a torn Achilles, this put a ton of pressure on the Ravens secondary once again because they were so used to that pass rush and presence up front from Suggs so they were naturally able to make plays on the football by themselves but that wasn’t the case either as they would double a lot of receivers and that would leave a guy open down the field. With a healthy Suggs coming back, Elvis Dumervil still in the mix and now adding Weddle, hopefully this gets the Ravens back to an elite category as a defense.
Eric Weddle is one of the very best at his position. He gives 125% on each play and he’s a team player with all the attributes needed to be a great safety. He’s a phenomenal tackler, he’s aggressive and will try his hardest to rip the ball out the ball-carriers hands and he’s got “sneaky athleticism”. He’s not the biggest guy in the world but he makes the biggest impact and he’s all over the field. He can come in on a safety blitz and get to the quarterback untouched and he can jump and swat the ball down in the air. He also covers so much ground and can get you an interception when you need it. The Ravens made a great pick up in signing this free agent.
