The NFL has had so many conduct issues over the years and a few guys have also been suspended for the use of drugs, alcohol or performance enhancers. Aldon Smith has had a serious issue with alcohol. The second run in he had with it, he was suspended for nine games. This past Summer, he was arrested for a DUI and the 49ers ended up releasing him. Josh Gordon will be returning from a year-long suspension and now Martavis Bryant has been given a year-long ban for violating the league’s substance abuse policy for the second time in less than a year. He missed the first four games last season because of the same issue.
This is a big loss for the Steelers offense. They have such an explosive trio of receivers in Markus Wheaton, Martavis Bryant and Antonio Brown and after signing Ladarius Green this offseason, the Steelers were expected to have one of the best passing offenses in the NFL this year. The reason I say this is such a big loss for the Steelers is because he’s their number two receiver behind Antonio Brown and a great complementary asset to him along with giving Ben Roethlisberger a nice possession receiver down the field. He reminds me so much of Plaxico Burress. He has a wide catch radius, he’s a speedy receiver that can break away into the open field, he can catch anything thrown in his direction (the catch he made in the Wild Card round proved that) and when Antonio went down with the concussion in January, Bryant had to step it up and become that go to guy for Ben. With his absence, guys like Darius Heyward-Bey, Sammie Coates and Markus Wheaton will all have to step it up.
This is Martavis Bryant’s second issue with drugs. You would think these guys would learn after seeing what some of their peers around the league have done. I really hope he can get the help he needs and beat this. He’s a talented player.
