One guy I’ve enjoyed watching play this year has been Dion Lewis. He’s bounced around the league a lot in his four-year stint in the NFL. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011, then signed with Cleveland. After a year with the Browns, he was signed by the Colts who ended up releasing him and the Patriots signed him this off-season after they lost Shane Vereen to the Giants in free agency. He’s been such a force for a prolific Patriots offense and unfortunately, he’s done for the year with a torn ACL.
This is a big loss for the Patriots. He’s become a gem for this football team and he’s given them a true threat underneath. The smaller backs are always the ones that you have to keep an eye out for because they are so quick and shifty and that describes Dion Lewis perfectly. He’s become Tom Brady’s true number three option as a receiver behind Gronk and Julian Edelman and he’s also been a security blanket because when those two are covered down the field, Brady could just toss the ball in Lewis’ direction and he’d make something happen. He’s a guy you can line up in the slot, he caught everything thrown to him and once he had the ball in his hands, he was a threat to score no matter where they were lined up. He has become the Patriots Darren Sproles.
No team is better at living by the next man up mentality than the New England Patriots. Brandon Bolden will have to be that guy now to check the ball too in certain situations and I think he’s capable of handling the job. He’s a very sure-handed back with great hands and you can do a little bit more with him such as lining him out wide and in the slot.
