The NFL trade deadline is approaching and there have been quite a few names that have been rumored to be dealt. We’ve heard about Matt Forte being traded and the Bears dealt a few guys early on in the season, Calvin Johnson has been one and so has Vernon Davis. The Denver Broncos have struck first and have acquired the pro bowler for a few draft picks and now Vernon moves from a 49ers team where he was a fan favorite and a vital piece to their offense to an undefeated Broncos team and he could spark up their offense a little bit.
When he’s healthy, Vernon Davis is one of the very best tight ends in the business. He’s athletic, he can run all the routes on the wheel, he can be spread out where a wide receiver would primarily be lined up, he catches everything thrown in his direction, he can block, he’s excellent after making the catch and I’ve always stated that you can catch the football all you want but how you move around with it is what’s most important and he’s been compared to a legend who once played in Denver and that’s a man by the name of Shannon Sharpe. This off-season, the Broncos lost Julius Thomas to the Jaguars via free agency and they knew last season they wouldn’t be able to keep both Thomas boys. After Julius left, they signed Owen Daniels which I thought wasn’t a bad move but he’s no Julius Thomas.
Vernon Davis gives the Broncos offense a true third option down the field. Obviously Emmanuel Sanders and DeMaryius Thomas are Peyton’s two go to guys on the outside but when those two are locked down, Peyton can turn to Davis over the middle and he will make them a much better offense especially in the red zone. Peyton Manning hasn’t looked like himself this year but last night was the best he has thrown the football all season long and now adding a Vernon Davis to the mix will hopefully turn them back into the offense we’ve come to know and expect. Now defenses will be prepping to stop Thomas, Sanders, Hillman, Anderson and Peyton. That could be lethal.
