It has been a very extreme year for injuries. Dez got hurt, Romo, Ben Roethlisberger was down for a while and the Ravens lost Terrell Suggs to a torn Achilles injury. That was their toughness on defense. It didn’t get any easier for the Ravens today. Their record has shown what type of year it’s been and they lost Steve Smith for the rest of the year with a torn Achilles.
Losing Suggs was big because the Ravens defense isn’t taken seriously as it once was. Once Ray Lewis retired, this became Suggs defense and without him, they lost their identity. He may not be the same guy he once was but he bought a toughness to that unit. Steve Smith did the exact same for the offense. He was Flacco’s go to guy and always made a big time catch when necessary. This is a huge loss for an offense that’s singlehandedly kept the Ravens in games.
During training camp, Steve Smith said this would be his final season as an active player. It’s tough to see a guy go down like that in his final season. He’s the toughest receiver I’ve ever seen play the game. He played bigger than he appeared and he played with swagger.
