Football is the one sport that can have a big impact on you from a physical, mental, psychological and emotional standpoint. When you suffer one injury, you’re unsure if you want to come back and play once more. Playing football is a grind because you have to put so much into one season to make sure you stay healthy and was it worth coming back. Today, shocking news came out about one of the best players in the NFL over the last three seasons. Patrick Willis is deciding to call it a career at the age of 30.
When I heard the news, I was absolutely stunned. I always raved about this guy and the way he played. He was one of the best linebackers in the league from when he was drafted and pretty much his entire career. He wasn’t the biggest guy on the field but he was the one guy that the opposing team had to game-plan for. He was a guy who had a great nose for the football. He could do it all. He could collapse down in the box and get after the ball-carrier with tremendous speed. He had great vision of the entire field and knew where to be at all times. He could cover running backs running screen routes, tight ends and he played downhill. He was such an active guy on the field and he was a scraper amongst his position. He did all the little things on the field and that’s what gave him an elite title. He was always one of the few guys on the stat sheet that would be at the top when it came to tackles in a game. Willis has even made comparisons to a guy who he idolized and even wore the same number as him and that’s Ray Lewis who’s considered to be one of the best ever to play the position.
When Ray retired, many said that Patrick Willis would be the face of the linebacker position. He still could play if he wanted too but he’s decided to call it a career. I wish this guy the absolute best in his future endeavors.
