College Football Playoff: National Championship
(2) Oregon vs (4) Ohio State
Oregon: Their regular season finale and the Rose Bowl was the best this team has looked all season long, especially their performance in Pasadena to begin 2015. When I saw the highlights of that game, what stood out to me the most was their ability on defense to force Florida State to make mistakes and their plan worked. They don’t have the type of defense to make you a one-dimensional football team but if you turn the football over on them, they will capitalize and make you pay for it. What more can we say about Marcus Mariota? He’s clearly been the best player in all of college football. He reminds me of a bigger Russell Wilson especially with his mobility but doesn’t mind throwing the football from the pocket if necessary. He’s truly a special player. The last time Oregon played in a National Championship game, they fell short to Auburn. Tonight, they have the chance to redeem themselves and win their first title in school history.
Ohio State: If I needed an adjective to describe Ohio State this season, it’s resilient. They’re playing for the National Championship with their third string quarterback. This team goes in the direction that Cardale Jones takes them in. We all know about the road they’ve had to travel to get to this point. They lost Braxton and back up quarterback J.T. Barrett both to injuries and unfortunately, a teammate lost their life to a self-inflicted gun wound. They’ve fought through the hardships and won two tough games to get to this point. A blowout of Wisconsin and shutting down Melvin Gordon and beating a heavily favored Alabama team in the Sugar Bowl. This offense can score, control the clock and the defense has the push up front to get to the quarterback. Urban Meyer is looking to win his third National Title as a coach and become another coach to win multiple championships with different schools. The only thing that stands in the way of that is a high-powered Oregon offense.
Prediction: It’s come down to this. Oregon took a hit on offense when receiver Darren Carrington was ruled ineligible because of a failed drug test. He’s their best receiver. He’s Mariota’s go to guy and he stretches the field vertically. The biggest challenge for Ohio State will be controlling the clock and getting pressure on Marcus. It’s key that Oregon makes Jones beat them with his arm. I like Ohio State to win this game. Ohio State 45 Oregon 41
