College Football Playoff (The Rose Bowl)
(2) Oregon at (3) Florida State
Oregon: It’s been the same storyline with them for the last few seasons. They’d get off to a very good start then when it matters the most to win and play for a potential National Championship, they would lose a key game down the stretch. That wasn’t the case this season. Oregon has clearly been one of the best teams in the country with the best player in the country in Marcus Mariota. He’s special in college and I think he can be a very good NFL player as well. He’s a different type of mobile quarterback because he just doesn’t depend on his legs to get the job done. He can beat you from the pocket and make plays with his arm. He leads the most potent and prolific offense in the country. After their one loss to Arizona during the season, they’ve bounced back and won out to get here. It’s what we’ve been waiting for. The first ever game of the inaugural College Football Playoff and to get the National Title game, they will have to defeat the defending champs. That’s all that stands in their way for a trip to Dallas.
Florida State: They were down in a majority of their games but they fought and you can’t deny that. Since Jameis Winston has been the starting quarterback for Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles, they haven’t lost a game. You can argue and say that a majority of the games they were losing in should have been losses but that’s what champions do. They fight and they won’t go down without a fight. This offense has lost some key guys from last years title team. Kelvin Benjamin was one of them. You lose him and gain another special receiver in Rashad Greene. He’s a playmaker that stretches the field vertically and he can go up for the ball. What worries me about this team is their defense. They definitely aren’t the unit they were a year ago when they won it all. The road to repeat as champions begins on New Year’s Day as they try to contain the quickest offense in the country.
Prediction: For the third time ever, we will see two Heisman winners featured in the same game. The key for Florida State will be their defense. They have to get consistent pressure on Mariota or it’ll be a really long game for them. The last time we saw Oregon in a big game in January was the National Championship in 2011. A guy named Chip Kelly was the head coach and they faced an Auburn team led by Cam Newton. I expect a shootout in this one. I’m picking Florida State to prevail. FSU 45 Oregon 34
