AFC Game Of The Week
Chiefs (2-3) at Chargers (5-1)
Chiefs: Heading into the season, I said the Chiefs would be one of the few teams who made the playoffs last season to miss it the following season because they don’t have enough depth at the receiver position. Bowe is hit or miss and they don’t have a threat to go down the field and make a play for Alex Smith. You look at many of the teams who make the playoffs and they all have threats in the receiving core. Denver and Indianapolis to name a few for example. They just can’t depend on Jamaal Charles to win games. Last season, they got off to such a hot start because of their defense. Early on, they lost Derrick Johnson for the whole season but Justin Houston has stepped up. Next, they will look to bring down a streaking Chargers team.
Chargers: After their win against Seattle, it’s been nothing but wins to follow. I’ve seen a lot of Philip Rivers over the years and this could be the best he’s ever looked. During the final seasons of the Norv Turner tenure, Rivers never had time to throw the football and when those offensive linemen don’t protect you up front, you become frustrated and all you do is heave the ball up in the air just to prevent getting sacked. It hasn’t been that way in the Mike McCoy era so far. Rivers has been a legit MVP candidate this year, Gates has looked like the guy we saw in the prime of his career and Keenan Allen is a star. I’m just concerned about their defense because they did give up four touchdowns to a rookie quarterback just last week. This is the tune up before a huge test in a week for the Chargers.
Predictions: Branden Oliver has come in and replaced Danny Woodhead and has been impressive. What concerns me about San Diego is their inability to get to the quarterback. They have to step that up. They have to make it a point of emphasis to shut down Jamaal Charles and put the game in Alex Smith’s hands. For Kansas City, be physical with their receivers at the line of scrimmage and jam them. I like San Diego to keep rolling. Chargers 24 Chiefs 20
