It’s a good day for the “who dat” nation and it’s also a good day to be a tight end especially if you are Jimmy Graham. Since he’s been in the league, he has become one of Drew’s go to guys in an offense where the ball is spread around so much. I always stated that he never had a go to guy because the mentality was simple: Get open and watch number nine get you the football with ease. Then in came Jimmy and he and Drew have built such a trust in one another. The talks have been heating up for a contract extension for Jimmy. One question even came about was he a tight end or wide receiver? He would lose his arbitration and was indeed considered a tight end though he’s been used all over the field.
Today, Jimmy and the Saints came to an agreement on a four-year/$40 million deal with $21 million guaranteed. Jimmy argued and felt he should-be tagged as a wide receiver but that didn’t go the way he wanted it too. He’s become the best tight end in the game. He opens up the middle of the field, he has excellent footwork which allows him to get past a defender and move with the ball in the open field, he can be used in the slot and on the outside as a wide receiver and he’s a big time threat in the red-zone. Jimmy has become a big piece of what the Saints do offensively. As an opposing defense when you prepare to face the Saints, the first thing people will say is how will we take away number 80?
This contract makes Jimmy Graham the highest paid tight end in the game today surpassing Rob Gronkowski’s $9 million a season. He deserves to be the highest paid tight end in the NFL today. The numbers don’t lie. He led the league with 16 receiving touchdowns and caught 86 passes despite missing some games due to a foot injury. Saints fans will now see this guy dunking on the goalposts more for the next four seasons.
