Since Phil Emery was hired as the Bears general manager, he’s been aggressive to make the Bears a better football team. His year on the job, he trades for Brandon Marshall, signs Matt Forte to a four-year contract extension, drafts Alshon Jeffery which has given Jay Cutler two big targets down the field. Let’s not forget Martellus Bennett either. This off-season, the Bears number one priority was to get that defense back together after a horrible season in 2013 in which they struggled to stop the run or defend anybody when you think about it. They signed LaMarr Houston to a five-year deal and Ryan Mundy to improve the back-end of that defense. Today, they made a bigger deal by bringing in one of the league’s best in Jared Allen.
This is what I call a ‘power move” by the Bears. The objective was to improve that defense and believe me, they did just that. Jared Allen is one of the top pass rushers in the game today. He has a relentless motor, great speed off the edge, excellent use of his hands, great footwork and he’s a guy that won’t stop until he reaches his destination. The Bears lost Julius Peppers to the Packers but signing Jared Allen is definitely an upgrade. I’ve seen a lot of Bears football over the years and I had never seen their defense look as terrible as they did last season. Everything that could go wrong for them did go wrong. They missed the chance to tackle in the open field, missed gap assignments and blew a lot of coverages in the secondary. A signing like this to me has put the Bears in great position to win their division.
