They were pretty much the laughing-stock of the National Football League last season. Matt Cassel wasn’t getting the job done, they had injuries to key guys on both sides of the football, they couldn’t score anything on offense and on defense, they had what I call an “escort service”. Nothing went right for this Kansas City Chiefs team and they also had some unfortunate tragedy as well as then linebacker Jovan Belcher committed suicide in the parking lot at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs finished 2012 with a 2-14 mark and the overall number one pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. They fired Romeo Crennel who was hired after taking over the previous season on an interim basis and hired one of the best coaches in our game over the last ten seasons in Andy Reid and they also got a fairly good but serviceable quarterback in Alex Smith. The Chiefs now sit at 5-0 in a division with the streaking Broncos with Peyton as their quarterback.
When I look at this turnaround of the Chiefs, I noticed how much structure this offense has and I give all the credit in the world to Andy Reid because he’s one of the finer offensive minds in our game today. The Chiefs are taking care of the football. To me, that’s been the biggest thing and when you take care of the ball, you win football games, point-blank period. They aren’t asking Alex Smith to throw the ball all over the field, thy just want him to take care of the ball and control the line of scrimmage and hand it off to Jamaal Charles who has become one of the best backs in the game today. Another thing I’ve noticed is that the Chiefs have more discipline. They aren’t committing any dumb penalties which is a huge added for them and they win the time of possession battle.
This was one of the worst defensive units in the game last year. This year, they’ve had much success in each part of the defense. Dontari Poe has had a fantastic season this year. He’s drawn so much attention on the interior of that defense that it’s allowed many one on one opportunities for Tamba Hali and Justin Houston on that linebacking core and their best defensive player in Eric Berry has had a fantastic season as well. The Chiefs defense has been getting takeaways and setting the offense up with good field position. Just an all-around improvement from a season ago and what a difference a year truly can make. I honestly feel this defense has what it takes to get to Peyton and the Broncos offense who is just rolling right now over anybody.
This is Kansas City’s first 5-0 start in ten seasons. They started 9-0 in 2003 and finished with a 13-3 mark.
